I am a fourth year undergraduate studying Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at UW-Madison. Climatology and carbon cycling are my primary interests, and I hope pursue them further in graduate school.
Currently, I am writing my senior thesis on the effects that Madison’s urban heat island has on mitigating cold temperatures during times of the year that frost/freeze warnings are issued. Because Madison’s forecasts are generally based on the average weather conditions a resident is expected to experience, a frost/freeze warning may not be relevant to the population affected by the urban heat island. This can be especially problematic for those who have urban gardens, as they might begin planting too late or pulling plants out prematurely due to flawed frost/freeze warnings. To investigate this problem, I am examining frost/freeze warnings issued by the National Weather Service for Madison and analyzing them alongside temperature data that has been collected throughout the city of Madison by the Kucharik lab.
